Hawaii and Oahu weddings

Michel's at the Colony Surf!
An unbiased review by Steve Young.

I'm a God fearing man. I'm a Christian to put it simply; not of any one particular denomination; and not hypocritical of any other. But I've always wondered how long did it take for Adam to marry Eve. They are really not too clear about that in the bible. Technically, Adam could have courted Eve anywhere for a mere second after she was created...or did he nervously take his time, the way most men do it. Did Adam have an angle, a cheesy pick-up line? Could you imagine if Eve actually rejected Adam? Scientifically, Adam would be rejected by his own rib! Talk about burned!!! Well, if that did happen, well, then we men could actually blame the entire non-creation of the human race on women.

Thank God that didn't happen.

But all joking aside, there is something to say about the way things were done when the world was first created. Everything was a lot more romantic in those days. Why back then, you always dined by candlelight. You always had a great view, with no concrete structures around. And unless a crazy dinosaur planned to disrupt your evening, everything was as perfect as could be.

Fast-forwarding to the very busy metropolis that we live in today, it is very difficult to recreate the romance of yesterday. Most restaurants don't offer great views, or even come close to creating a very fun and romantic atmosphere. But there are exceptions to the rule, Michel's Restaurant, are one of those.

Eloping in Hawaii: weddings in Oahu

Michel's is five star restaurant tucked away on the ground floor of the Colony Surf. The restaurant rolls up right on the beach, and its entire restaurant frames a perfect view of the ocean. The dress code for this restaurant, is casually elegant, which means….who am I joking, I have no idea what that means. You have a choice to valet your car, or if you want, you could choose to park your car on the street in front of the hotel and walk in. My date, who shall remain nameless, and I, chose to park our car on the street and to walk in. It's actually a great walk under the moon, it's not too long, and safe (no criminals). If you do choose this option, it is rather confusing to actually find the restaurant. Just remember to walk towards the hotel on the ground floor and not to walk up the parking ramp.

We arrived about ten minutes early for our reservation, and they did take maybe five minutes over our reservation time to set our table. But that was not a great concern to us. Walking to our seats, I was immediately hit by Michel's atmosphere. There was a guitar player in the corner playing music just at the right volume, who was loud enough to be heard, soft enough so I didn't have to yell over him. Our table, to my surprise was a setup to face the ocean, where both my date and I both sat side by side, and shared a great view.

Let's just focus on the view here for a second. It was pretty amazing. It was lit…perfectly. Michel's really did their homework on lighting.

The waiter soon came by to tell us their daily specials. You know what, I'm going to say it bluntly, but he spoke too fast, and there was just too much things to remember. We both didn't remember what he said, and to tell you the truth, we're both very smart people. I really don't see why waiters can't just bring us a Xerox copy of their daily specials. We can't all have photographic memories.

For dinner, we both ordered meat, my date got a Filet Mignon, and I got a Steak Diane. We shared a soup for an appetizer. Presentation wise, it was awesome. Especially, my Steak Diane, where they cooked it right in front of me. I'm a huge fan of fire, so anything with fire does it for me. My date's Filet Mignon was butterflied, and not the best I've tasted. She did though have these killer apples on her plate, which tasted really good. Kinda like those McDonald's Apple Pies. (Can't you tell I'm high class...)Why they put apples next to brown gravy puzzles me. My Steak Diane, it lacked a solid Steak Flavor that I was accustomed to at my tailgate parties. And to be quite honest with you all, I think I can Diane a steak better than Michel's can. Whatever the hell Diane means. Also, our steaks really filled us up. After a few slices, we were really full, which tells me that they go heavy on the flour or cornstarch in their brown gravy. We were so full, that we didn't get to dessert. Even though we both were craving for some chocolate, we were just too full. The bottom line here, if you do head to Michel's, you may want to try the fish versus the meat. Not only may it taste better, but it'll leave more room in your stomach for dessert!!!

The total damage for the night: $109.00 for two; not bad at all. But take in mind that we shared a soup, and only had two entrees, with two virgin strawberry daiquiris (we both don't drink.) I expect for a regular couple to spend close to $200 per an average meal with all the bells and whistles, maybe even more.

Now given that the food wasn't the greatest out there for us on this day, I still have to give this restaurant a huge recommendation. Their service was incredible and impeccable. We took close to an hour to order our food, because we kept getting sidetracked, which probably pissed off our waiter. Just from having friends in the service industry, I know for a fact that waiters hate that and are more likely to spit in your food. Afterall, turnaround in a restaurant is essential, along with having a huge meal ticket. But there was no pressure at all to order immediately…and I'm pretty sure the waiter didn't spit in my food. I don't know about my date's dish though. I actually should have checked if he did. (Just kidding!!) Well when we finally put our menus down, our waiter was there in the wings, waiting for us. The view, ambience, and service, and most likely the fish, without forgetting the desserts…are memorable. Dining at Michel's would really make your wedding night complete.
