TRAVEL TIPS!

So I'm sure by now you've scoured the internet and have found tons of travel tips. And I'm sure you've probably traveled before, so you basically know what you're doing. With that said though, here are some travel tips that may come in handy when planning your trip to Hawaii .

LOW BUDGET – The cheapest time to travel to Oahu, or any of the islands is during the month of October because it's a pretty slow tourist period in Hawaii and a pretty slow travel seasonas well (local college kids have already headed back to the mainland.) During October, it is not unusual to find very cheap airfares, say around mid to low 200's for a roundtrip flight from LAX. If possible, try booking your flight to leave and return between Monday's and Thursday's. This will guarantee you're getting the cheapest flight possible. Also try booking your trip six to three months prior to your vacation.

GREAT SURF – If you're an outdoor couple looking to catch a few waves when you're in Hawaii, book your trip during the winter and spring months. The storms in the Pacific kick up the waves on the North Shore. During the spring, southern swells will roll in at times, creating some great waves in Waikiki .

BUY YOUR SWIMSUITS, BOARD SHORTS, HERE - And don't buy them in Waikiki. Head to one of our major malls or small bikini shops that litter our island. They are cheaper, better made. As far as board shorts go; guys, but surf shorts. They are really comfortable, and you can even wear them when you're not going swimming like most locals do. You can check out Costco or Sam's club for some great boardshorts.

RENTING VACATION HOMES - Vacation homes can be expensive, but if you are traveling with a couple of families, this may be a cheaper alternative. The average day price of a mediocre hotel room in Waikiki is around $250 dollars per couple. When renting a vacation home, if you split the rent with your friends and family, the daily cost could come out to 25 dollars per night per couple!!! And you basically get to stay in a nice home, on the beach, in a nice residential area. So don't rule out vacation homes if you are traveling with a big group.

RENTING A CAR - Do it. That's all I have to say. Do not travel to Oahu or any other island without renting a car. Many travel agents will advise you to not a rent a car when traveling to Oahu and will advise that you stay in Waikiki. They are flat out wrong. Because if you stay in Waikiki for your entire trip, or in any town for that matter, you will be missing out on the entire island. Taking a bus tour of Oahu will not do you justice. Waiting for the bus stop with all your goodies that you bought from the mall is a pain. Navigating the island is not very difficult at all. Yes street names are difficult to pronounce, but we only have 3 freeways here in Oahu , and one main freeway. And if you drive in one direction long enough, you'll eventually circle the island and end up where you started.

Now when you rent your car, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR VALUABLES IN YOUR CAR!!! You are marked because you are a tourist, and rental cars do have a distinctive look to themselves. Hate to profile anyone here but if you see a very well dressed couple walking out of Ford convertible mustang with an Aloha shirt on….we know you're not from here; and so do the criminals. Leave your valuables at home, or take them with you.

SUN TANNING - Use the highest SPF out there that you can buy. I actually use a Banana Boat Sport's 50spf sunblock. It's water proof, doesn't turn white when I'm in the water, and actually doesn't smell too funny either. Also, it really works. You'll still get a tan...don't worry. You'll stil get a tan with high SPF sunblocks because you'll spend a lot of time in the sun. You just won't get burnt, and that's key.
