One of the best sunsets I ever took! Talk about luck!
Sunrise vs Sunset Wedding in Hawaii (Which One Is Better?)
This is one of the most common decisions couples run into when planning a wedding on Oahu:
“Should we do sunrise or sunset?”
Both sound amazing. Both look beautiful. And both can create a completely different experience.
After helping plan and photograph more than 20,000 weddings here on Oahu, I can tell you there isn’t really a “better” option. But there is a better choice for you, depending on the kind of experience you’re looking for.
Sunrise weddings are one of the best-kept secrets in Hawaii. Most people don’t realize how different the island feels early in the morning. The beaches are quieter, the air is cooler, and everything feels calm. It’s not just about the lighting — it’s the atmosphere. You’re not competing with crowds, noise, or activity, and it often feels like the beach is yours for that moment. That alone makes the ceremony feel more personal and relaxed.
This becomes especially noticeable in places that get busy later in the day. A location like Magic Island is a perfect example. In the afternoon, it can be active and full of people. In the morning, it’s a completely different experience — open, quiet, and much more intimate. That shift can completely change how the ceremony feels.
From a photography standpoint, sunrise is also one of the easiest times to work with. The light is softer, the tones are more even, and you don’t have to deal with harsh shadows or glare. Everything just looks more natural.
The trade-off is simple. You have to wake up early. For some couples, that becomes part of the experience. For others, especially if you’re traveling or adjusting to a time difference, it can feel like a bit of a push.
Sunset weddings are what most people picture when they think about getting married in Hawaii. The colors in the sky, the warmth of the light, and the way everything changes as the sun drops create a naturally dramatic setting. There’s a reason sunset is so popular — it delivers that classic Hawaii look every time.
There’s also a different kind of energy on the island later in the day. The beach is more active, people are out enjoying the evening, and there’s a sense of movement in the background. Some couples love that feeling because it makes the experience feel more alive.
The trade-off is that you’re sharing the space. Popular areas, especially places like Waikiki, can be busy. It doesn’t ruin the moment, but it does make it less private and a little more unpredictable.
From a photography standpoint, sunset can be incredible, but it moves quickly. The best light happens in a relatively short window, so timing becomes more important. When everything lines up, though, the results can be stunning.
Midday is usually the least ideal option. The sun is higher, the light is harsher, and beaches tend to be at their busiest. It can still work, but it’s generally not the most comfortable or flattering time of day if you have flexibility.
In the end, the decision between sunrise and sunset comes down to the experience you want. If you’re looking for something quiet, relaxed, and more private, sunrise is usually the better fit. If you’re drawn to dramatic skies and that classic Hawaii look, sunset delivers that every time.
There isn’t really a wrong choice. There’s just the one that matches your style.
One thing I’ve learned after doing this for decades is that the right combination of timing and location makes all the difference. A busy beach at the wrong time can feel chaotic, while that same location at the right time can feel completely secluded. That’s where experience really comes in — knowing where to go, when to go, and how to match those two things together.
At the end of the day, Hawaii already gives you everything you need. The ocean, the light, the breeze, the sky — it’s all working for you. The more you work with those natural elements instead of trying to control them, the better the experience becomes.
🤝 A Quick Note
If you’re not sure whether sunrise or sunset is the better fit, I’m happy to help you figure it out. I can point you toward locations that aren’t crowded, have the best lighting for your ceremony time, and feel a little more private so the moment is actually yours.
